NC Film Partnership With Courtney Smallwood: Paid Film Internships

Listen to Courtney share about the Film Partnership on our ESS podcast!

Courtney Smallwood began her career in government, where she developed a strong foundation in public policy, project management, and community relations. During her time in the public sector, she honed her marketing and communications skills while working on various state initiatives. These experiences prepared her perfectly for her current role with Film Partnership NC (https://filmpartnershipnc.org/), where she handles marketing efforts for the organization founded by Susi Hamilton (former NC state representative and worked with Gov Cooper), Darla McGlamery & Lauren Vilchik.

As the marketing specialist for Film Partnership NC, Courtney’s champions the organization’s mission to create paid opportunities for interns to gain real-world experience in the film industry. She effectively communicates how the partnership funds these internships, allowing film projects and studios to bring on emerging talent at no financial risk to the production companies. Her marketing campaigns highlight this win-win model: Aspiring filmmakers receive competitive compensation while gaining invaluable hands-on training, and production companies benefit from additional support without the administrative and financial burdens typically associated with internship programs.

Smallwood works closely with founders Hamilton and McGlamery to promote their vision of bridging the critical gap between North Carolina’s need for skilled film workers and the state’s hunger for more film opportunities. Through strategic partnerships with the NC Film Commission, Film Partnership NC has created a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures local talent while attracting more productions to the state. Smallwood’s marketing initiatives emphasize how this collaborative approach strengthens North Carolina’s position in the competitive film landscape, fulfilling the founders’ goal of creating a thriving film industry that provides meaningful career pathways for North Carolinians while boosting the state’s creative economy.

NC Film Partnership strongly encourages studios and film projects in the state to partner with them for intern placement on set https://filmpartnershipnc.org/partnership-opportunities/
