Is Space The Next Frontier of Sports?
For decades, the “space race” has represented exploration, innovation, and technological achievement. But what if the next chapter isn’t just about reaching space – it’s about competing there? Owning a slice of heaven?
On this episode of Entertainment & Sports Spotlight, I had the opportunity to speak with Philip Hover-Smoot, Founder and CEO of Atlas Cup, about his ambitious vision to create what aims to become the world’s first professional sport in space.
A Billion-Dollar Industry Needs a Billion-Dollar Mindset: Inside Atlas Cup’s Vision
Drawing on years of experience in the commercial space industry, defense, and Silicon Valley technology companies, Philip shared how Atlas Cup plans to transform orbital racing into a global spectator sport. Rather than inventing entirely new technology, Atlas Cup is leveraging existing advancements in satellites, spacecraft, and commercial launch capabilities to create a new form of competition that blends engineering, innovation, and entertainment.
One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation centered on the idea that competition has always accelerated human progress. Just as Formula 1 helped drive automotive innovation, Philip believes orbital racing can inspire new breakthroughs in aerospace technology while making space more accessible and engaging for the public.
We also discussed the rapid growth of the commercial space economy, the role of AI and autonomous systems, the importance of storytelling in building a new sport, and why today’s technological infrastructure makes this vision more achievable than ever before.

Beyond the technology, this interview explored entrepreneurship, leadership, and the courage required to pursue ideas that many initially consider impossible.
Meet Philip Hover-Smoot: The Vision Behind Atlas Cup
Before launching Atlas Cup, Philip Hover-Smoot built a career at the intersection of commercial space, national defense, entrepreneurship, and Silicon Valley innovation. Over the past decade, he has held leadership roles across the aerospace industry, working with satellite technology, launch services, space-based imaging, and government programs while helping guide emerging companies through periods of rapid growth.
Trained as both an attorney and business leader, Philip’s career has included executive leadership, legal strategy, venture-backed startups, and commercial space operations. His experience spans work with defense contractors, commercial aerospace companies, and Silicon Valley technology organizations, giving him a unique perspective on how innovation moves from ambitious ideas to real-world execution.
As the former CEO of Scout Space, Philip led the company through a period of significant expansion, growing its team, securing government contracts, and advancing space situational awareness technologies that enable satellites to safely operate and maneuver in orbit. Earlier in his career, he also worked in launch services, satellite operations, and international defense programs, developing a broad understanding of the rapidly evolving commercial space economy.
Today, Philip is channeling that experience into Atlas Cup – a company with one of the most ambitious visions in modern sports and technology. Rather than developing entirely new spacecraft, Atlas Cup seeks to leverage proven commercial space technologies to create what it aims to become the world’s first professional space racing league. The goal is not only to entertain audiences but also to inspire innovation and showcase how competition can accelerate technological advancement.
During our conversation on Entertainment & Sports Spotlight, Philip shared how years spent working across commercial space, defense, and Silicon Valley shaped his belief that humanity is entering a new era – one where entertainment, engineering, entrepreneurship, and space exploration are beginning to converge in ways that were once considered science fiction.
The Most To-Be-Viewed Sporting Event?
Whether you’re interested in sports, aerospace, business, or innovation, Philip offers a compelling perspective on where the future may be headed —and why the next great sporting event could take place far above our planet as the most viewed sports event in history.
